Things I do not know, a list from my writer’s notebook.

I do not know how to light a pipe. 

I do not know the rules of chess.

I do not know why my grandmother’s hands were soft.

I do not know how unborn babies breathe.

I do not know when I’m faking it.

I do not know where my mind stops and my body begins.

I do not know when a steak is done.

I do not know how to face the end.

I do not know if my cat hates eating the same thing every day.

I do not know how long my parents will live.

I do not know when to throw away shoes. 

I do not know if my dreams can hurt me.
